Apparatus

We've come a long way since 1890 when the first piece of equipment was purchased, a used hand water pumper which required 8 to 10 volunteers to stand on each side and work the handrails up and down to pump out a powerful stream of water. This was to replace or supplement the old bucket brigade which was the only way to get water to a fire prior to this purchase.

In 1901 the first engine house was opened on Gustin Square.

It wasn't until 1925 that the first fire engine was purchased, a Stewart truck with a Hale Pump. In the 1930's more equipment was purchased.

In 1936 that equipment was moved to the new Island Fire Station, and can been seen in this picture.

The Colton Fire District today is protected by the Colton Fire Department.

The original two Fire Companies based in Colton and South Colton have recently been merged to form one unit.

Colton (Now know as Station #1)

South Colton (Now know as Station #2)

The Colton Fire Department maintains a fleet of vehicles and equipment designed to help the people in the Township of Colton. They protect not only the property within the Township, but also have Ambulance and Rescue Equipment to meet the needs of the people.

Since there is such diversity within the Township, there is specialized equipment for emergencies on the land, water and in the wilderness. The equipment is also used when needed for Mutual Aid calls in surrounding communities.

The following are pictures of the equipment
